A fascinating reflection on how science fiction can act as a worldview, in this case containing a literally vital expression of the pointlessness of war.

It was actually a series of pointless wars beginning with World War I. My grandfather was in three wars, two world wards and the civil war that ravaged Austria which had been completely destroyed after World War I - a country of 53 million people in which 16 languages were spoken. Then there were 2 major depressions. What could we not all have done with the wasted resources? Stefan Zweig, the Austrian Writer of "Magellan" and "Balzac" remembers the days where you could travel the world without a passport in "The World of Yesterday". Many of the things an open future that appears in non-dystopian science fiction can be found in great eras of the past.
